Joining the Indian Army offers a rewarding career that allows individuals to serve their country and make a positive impact. There are different entry routes available for both soldiers and officers. Let’s explore the journey from being a soldier to an officer in the Indian Army:

  • Soldier Entry/Agniveer :

a. Soldier General Duty (GD): This entry is open for candidates who have completed their 10th standard or equivalent. They need to appear for the Indian Army Soldier General Duty Recruitment Rally, which includes physical fitness tests, medical examination, and a written examination.

b. Soldier Technical: Candidates with a science background can apply for this entry. They must have completed their 10+2 education with subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The selection process includes a recruitment rally and subsequent medical and written exams.

c. Soldier Clerk/SKT: This entry is for candidates who have completed their 10+2 education in any stream but with proficiency in computer applications. The selection process involves a recruitment rally, medical examination, and a written test.

d. Soldier Nursing Assistant: Candidates with a background in science and a specific interest in nursing can apply for this entry. They must have completed their 10+2 education with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English. The selection process includes a recruitment rally, medical examination, and a written test.   e. Soldier Tradesman: This entry allows candidates with specialized skills in trades such as chef, tailor, hairstylist, etc., to join the Indian Army. The eligibility criteria and selection process vary depending on the trade.

  • Officer Entry:

   a. National Defense Academy (NDA): Male candidates who have completed their 10+2 education can apply for the NDA examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The selection process includes a written examination, interview by the Services Selection Board (SSB), and a medical examination.

   b. Combined Defense Services (CDS): Both male and female candidates who have completed their graduation can apply for the CDS examination conducted by UPSC. The selection process includes a written examination, SSB interview, and medical examination.

   c. Technical Graduate Course (TGC): Male candidates who have completed their engineering degree or are in the final year of engineering can apply for the TGC entry. The selection process involves shortlisting based on academic qualifications, followed by an SSB interview and medical examination.

   d. Short Service Commission (Non-Technical Men/Women): This entry is open to both men and women who have completed their graduation. The selection process includes a written examination (for certain fields), SSB interview, and medical examination.

e. University Entry Scheme (UES): Male candidates who are in the pre-final year of their engineering degree can apply for the UES entry. The selection process involves a campus interview, SSB interview, and medical examination.

Once selected, candidates undergo rigorous training at various training academies such as the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA), or respective training centers for soldiers. Successful completion of training leads to the rank of a commissioned officer in the Indian Army.
